Nikon "1 Brand" V1 and J1 Mirrorless Cameras Announced

Nikon "1 Brand" V1 and J1 Mirrorless Cameras Announced - New Mount, New Lenses NikonHQ Nikon and Canon are jumping on this mirrorless market. Less moving parts. Sounds exciting if for no other reason in that it would enable more folks to get into the SLR game without getting a second mortgage. More later.

Metallic Prints

Sunrise on the Carnival Liberty - Jan. 21, 2011 Click Here If you have an opportunity to get prints made on metallic paper, I strongly recommend you do it. I ordered a 5x7 of Karen for my desk and two 11x14 ship photos and the color fidelity is staggering! Of course this would only be for images you really care about but this is suitable-for-framing stuff, folks!

How to Create Dramatic Background Effects

I use a number of Gary Fong products, including the Lightsphere.  I use the collapsible model when traveling.  What this lesson shows is how color balance is achieved.  You take a picture with the blue gel over your lens and then set your custom white balance to that image.  Put the blue gel on your lightsphere (or speedlight) and snap.  What you end up with is a color tone at the opposite end of the spectrum.  For blue, it’s red.  For green, it’s magenta, etc. Off to practice!

Dear Photograph

Image
Nikon D700, f/16, 1/30 sec., ISO560, 28mm See Gallery Here I found out about Dear Photograph on Facebook one day through the Adobe Photoshop feed and knew right away which photo I wanted to do.  Someday I will try one from my distant past but this one, from Interstate State Park in Taylors Falls taken 6/23/92 will do. First a stop at my father-in-law's union picnic at Lake Phalen (St. Paul). Nikon D700, f/8, 1/250 sec, ISO200, 28mm Always a nice time.  Free food.  Support our unions and workers.  Then off to Taylors Falls.  I never get tired of the view: Nikon D700, f/8, 1/250 sec, ISO200, 28mm, Topaz filter We had 2 pictures from that day in 1992.  Here is the other one: We could not find this spot.  The spot we did find is actually below the scenic overlook stop on Hwy 8.  Use to be, you could park there but not any more, you have to go into the park and pay your $5 for a permit. I was laughing out loud at something when this picture

This is handy

At the Lake With Blaneks

Image
Nikon D700, f/9, 1/320, ISO200, 28mm See Gallery Here We have not been to lake county in ages so when Harry extended the invitation to head up to Cumberland, WI - we went for it. The weather was in & out most of the day Saturday the 23rd, then finally went out for good around 5PM. Lots of lighting challenges as the sunlight situation changed almost from minute to minute. Nikon D700, f/11, 1/1000, ISO1000, 28mm Of course it all cleared up after we left on Sunday.  I feel an urge to apologize for bringing the bad weather!  There is a 4-lane bowling alley in town and the young people wanted to go.  Too late, they were closed!  Off to the Spot Bar instead where they played pool whilst the oldsters sat and schmoozed. Lots of cruise talk.  The youngsters were a stitch: Nikon D700, f/5, 1/160, ISO200, 28mm So no opportunities for sunset/sunrise pics although I got up at the crack of dawn Sunday anyway.  The lake was fogged over so I took what I could.
